The TerraTwin project has officially commenced its ambitious 36-month journey. Representatives from our 14 partner organizations, spanning 9 countries, convened in Athens for the inaugural Kick-Off Meeting. Hosted by the project coordinator, Netcompany, the two-day event marked the formal start of our collaborative effort to build a Holistic Digital Twin of the Ecosystem (DTE).
Over the course of the meeting, consortium members engaged in intensive planning sessions to solidify the project’s strategic roadmap. Discussions centered on aligning the distinct work packages and defining the technical and operational methodologies required to achieve the project’s core objectives.
Key focus areas established during the kick-off include:
- Cross-Domain Data Harmonization: Developing frameworks to seamlessly integrate and standardize fragmented datasets across both marine and terrestrial environments.
- Pilot Site Deployment: Defining the operational parameters and use cases for our 4 dedicated Pilot Sites, which will serve as critical real-world testing grounds for technology validation.
- Technical Infrastructure: Laying the groundwork for the robust Artificial Intelligence and Big Data pipelines that will power the underlying architecture of the Digital Twin.
The vision for TerraTwin extends far beyond building a technical tool. The consortium is dedicated to delivering a functional, comprehensive decision-support system. By providing an interactive environment to model scenarios and test conservation strategies, the project aims to equip policymakers, researchers, and local authorities with the insights necessary to actively protect and sustain Europe’s natural capital.
